We believe that cinema cycles are useful not just to spend an entertaining couple of hours watching moving images on a screen, but also to aid our studies as young researchers. Not only do cinema cycles help reflect our interests, but they also allow for interesting and diverse discussions about what is being depicted on the screen. For that reason, the JRAAS group organised two cinema cycles dedicated to spreading the word about the following themes:
“Time Capsule: Futures Gone By”, explores what creatives in the 20th century thought the first quarter of the 21st century might turn out to be. The idea for this cycle came up as a companion for our first newsletter, which came out on May 21st. To this end, our group opted for three films:
- V for Vendetta (2005; dir. James McTeigue) on March 25th;
- Soylent Green (1973; dir. Richard Fleischer) on April 16th;
- 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968; dir. Stanley Kubrick) on April 29th.
Furthermore, “Green on the Screen”, will explore Irish identity, culture, and language. The idea for this cycle came about due to our group’s great interest in Irish Studies, along with the fact that we believe that the Irish world is still an underdog amongst its peers in the research field. For this purpose, the JRAAS group compiled another three films:
- The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006; dir. Ken Loach) which will be screened on June 2nd;
- In the Name of the Father (1993; dir. Jim Sheridan), to be shown on June 16th;
- Kneecap (2024; dir. Rich Peppiatt), to be screened on June 25th.
Thanks to all who attended the first cinema cycle and we hope to see you in the second!
