Mapping Horror Films: A PhD Journey into Slasher Cinema

By raquelsouza , 16 October, 2026

I am delighted to share that I have been awarded a scholarship from the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) to pursue my PhD research project, Slasher Cinema Across Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula: Mapping Cultural Anxieties Through Local Reconfigurations of an American Subgenre.

My research explores how slasher cinema, a horror subgenre closely associated with American filmmaking, has been reinterpreted and transformed across Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula. Rather than treating the slasher as a fixed set of conventions, the project investigates how local filmmakers adapt, or choose not to adapt, its narrative structures and themes to reflect the cultural anxieties and social concerns of their own contexts.

CETAPS will be my host institution throughout this journey. Together with Dr. Luciano Moreira, Dr. Márcia Lemos, and Dr. João Guimarães, I aim to make this research participatory. Horror enthusiasts, both inside and outside academia, will not only be able to access the database of slasher films from these different geographical contexts generated by the project, but will also be invited to recommend films.

This is only the beginning! Stay tuned for more updates on the project, as well as the activities and opportunities for participation we will be developing along the way. I look forward to sharing this journey with fellow researchers, horror enthusiasts, and everyone interested in exploring the many faces of slasher cinema.
