My name is Cansu Rendeci, and I am at a crossroads in my academic journey. I'm currently pursuing a PhD in Media Studies in Türkiye, but my path here at CETAPS has been anything but straightforward. I’ve always loved to explore language, culture, and media. This led me to earn a BA in Translation Studies, another in Advertising and Communication Design and later, an MA in Public Relations. Each step has been a piece of the puzzle, bringing me closer to where I am today.
In my earlier career as a translator and conference interpreter, I had a deep interest for the nuances of cultural studies. I loved the way translation forced me to look beyond words, to take a closer look into the underlying meanings, and to capture the essence of a text in another language. One of my favorite courses during undergraduate studies was English Literature, where I discovered the art of close reading. Reflecting on each word, weighing its implications, and seeking the perfect equivalent in the target language… I found all of it scintillating. Since then, my world has never quite been the same.
Recently, I stumbled upon CETAPS, and I felt an immediate surge of excitement. Their research areas align so perfectly with my interests that it almost feels like fate. CETAPS has multiple research areas, which include translation studies, English literature, and media—all the fields that have shaped my academic and professional life. And now, I am thrilled to say that I am a scholarship holder at the CETAPS Digital Lab at the heart of one of the most beautiful cities in the world - Porto!
From collaborating with scholars of diverse backgrounds to working on unique projects that act as bridges between technology and the humanities, at CETAPS the possibilities feel infinite, when I think about it. I can't wait to ask the kinds of questions that could pave the way for future research. The idea that my work might contribute to something lasting, something that will benefit researchers for years to come, is nothing short of exhilarating anyway.
What excites me most is the chance to learn more about digital humanities, a field that, while growing, still has so much to uncover. I hope that through the projects underway at CETAPS, I will be expanding my knowledge, but also help build a foundation for future researchers to ask even more profound and meaningful questions. I am proud to be part of this forward-thinking community, to be in close proximity to multiple inspiring projects, and to contribute to work that will drive the future of digital humanities. The journey ahead is uncertain, but I have never felt more ready or more excited to see where it leads.
