Non-Places in Hitchcock! That was the theme of JRAAS first cinema cycle that took place in CineClube da Maia. We started with the screening of The Lady Vanishes (1938) on the 14th of June. In the film, an elderly lady mysteriously disappears in a train and the only person who seems to remember her is the young lady who was traveling by her side. One week later, on June 21st, we screened the very well-known, North by Northwest (1959), with the insightful remarks of our guest commentator Mário Augusto. The thriller follows the story of an advertising executive who finds himself caught up in an espionage conspiracy. Both sessions helped us to delve into how Hitchcock used non-places such as trains, airports and stations to build plots surrounded by mystery and secrecy.
