In the 2024 Call for PhD Studentships, a science communication project part of the Doctoral Program in Science Education and Communication was submitted for evaluation.
The project entitled “STEAM for all: from representations to storytelling and hands-on activities towards gender equity” falls under the Specific Line of Application in a Non-Academic Environment, which gains from the combination of academic and non-academic institutions, broadening the vision, potential and dissemination of activities.
The studentship will allow us to develop two complementary studies in two academic institutions, Research Center in Chemistry (CIQUP) and Centre for English, Translation, and Anglo-Portuguese Studies (CETAPS), and one non-academic institution, Centro de Ciência Viva de Vila de Conde (CCVVC). The study 1, “Representation of women in STEAM fields in Portugal”, will promote a visualisation of data representation, social representation and public visibility of women in STEAM; and CIQUP and CETAPS will have a pivotal role. The study 2, “Promotion of interest in STEAM fields through storytelling and hands-on activities”, will implement science communication initiatives with children from 4 to 8 years old; with the intervention of CIQUP and CCVVC.
This is a four-year research project that will broaden the vision of the gender scope in STEAM fields.
