We are very happy to invite you to our workshop, “Mapping Utopias: An Introduction to Mapmaking in R.” It is to be held on 22 January from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm at FLUP in room 202. In this workshop we embrace the concept of capta (from Drucker, 2012), which suggests that rather than passively accepting data as "given," we actively construct it through interpretation. This critical thinking is one of the main goals of our workshop which seeks to delve into the world of digital mapmaking.

During two hours, participants will use a pre-existing database curated by JRAAS to create and visualize maps in R. The Great Utopians database from the Utopia500 project provides a rich foundation for recreating utopian thinking. During the process of creation, we will discuss how maps are more than technical outputs, they are excellent tools to foster new questions, insights and interpretative frameworks.
If you are interested in participating, all you need is a laptop with an Internet connection and pre-installed software: R Studio and the specific R packages that will be provided in advance. Make your registration here!
