On March 25th, our JRAAS group kicked off its first cinema cycle of 2026 “Time Capsule: Futures Gone By” (with the support of Associação Luso-Britânica do Porto) with the film V for Vendetta (2005), directed by James McTeigue. In order to start off the session, Professor Joana Caetano, PhD kindly provided an engrossing introduction to the film. In order to help insert the audience within the film’s historical and political context, Professor Joana Caetano’s introduction to the film touched on relevant subjects depicted in the film: the importance of hope, cultural preservation, memory, and democratic values. Undoubtedly, themes such as these are more pertinent than ever, especially when we reflect on the current political climate.
It was a pleasure to host this initial session of JRAAS’s first 2026 cinema cycle and we were delighted to welcome all those who attended to watch and discuss the film with us. In addition, we look forward to hosting the next cinema session from this cycle, which will take place on April 16th, in collaboration with Passos no Escuro, where we will screen Soylent Green (1973), directed by Richard Fleischer, with an introduction by Raquel Souza. We hope to see you there!
